an Assistent not limited to conversion of VDR-recordings to DVD-images

VdrAssistant

Welcome

VdrAssistant is experiment and application

  • Experiment cause I wanted to try out new/uncommon techniques without caring about those already existing ones
  • Application cause you can call a technique "usable" only if it is really used.

As the technical design has precedence over applications time to market, a richclient framework has arised from the VdrAssistant. Meanwhile the framework has become a toplevel project of its own: SRJRCFrames.

If you have sparetime and like to participate, you're invited to do so.
I'll be pleased about it.

from a users point of view ...

... VdrAssistant is an application to manage VDR-recordings. Beside that, it serves to design menue-templates, that will be used at dvd-authoring.

You can use VdrAssistant to create so called "jobs", which specify what recordings form part of the compilation, which menue template should be used for authoring, wich audiotracks form part of the final recording and (if necessary) how much the recordings may be compressed.

The conversion is processed by a service, which runs without GUI and so may be installed at a server without monitor.

Last not least, VdrAssistant offers a browser for EPG-data, to browse the TV-events offline, which means, without a VDR being online. That browser offers various filters and search routines to find events of interest.

from a developers point of view ...

... VdrAssistant is an application frame, that starts loadable applications from a specified directory and which publishes Services for that applications. Comparable to an application server - so the loadable applications can use a database without knowledge of the database access parameters. Same is true for internationalization, loading of images and the like.
A loadable application may also publish a service and other applications may use that without knowing anything about the publishing application.

The application frame cares about the trivial stuff like configuration data, application menues, toolbars, window manager, and the like ...
VdrAssistant provides a centralized preferences dialog, where the preferences of all loaded applications will be handled.

That dialog has an additional page to manage the system services - so from that page services can be started, stopped or monitored ...

System services are pure java applications without GUI and that will be started and stopped by the ServiceManager. The service manager validates the running services.
